There are even hidden rooms for you discover, and a large tech tree that you can use to unlock skills and bonuses. Defensively, you’ll have access to specialized armor blocks which you can use to deflect certain projectiles, and you’ll even have the ability to shoot enemy missiles out of the air with your own defense cannons. Shot placement and strategy are crucial to disabling your opponent, and it makes it all the more satisfying when you see their mighty fort come crashing down. Firearms, missiles, and even lasers are at your disposal, and each weapon can be used to target a specific defensive tactic. There are over ten different unique weapons to build and use. Creating a fort that isn’t structurally sound will also present opportunity to your opponent, who may find victory in targeting any weak spots you’ve created. You’ll need to keep in mind that your structure needs anchor points, and you’ll be using metal and wires to shore up problem areas. Your fort is affected by physics, and you won’t be able to simply stack a bunch of wood up haphazardly.
Creation of fort pieces works a lot like a bridge construction game, in which you add and connect pieces together. Fort creation and attacks happen in real time, forcing you to juggle between building your fort, attacking your opponent, and defending from an onslaught of attacks. But you won’t get the opportunity to analyze your opponent like you would in a long-winded chess match. The gameplay for Forts revolves heavily around strategic placement and creation of both offensive and defensive mechanisms. The key is to ensure that your fort stands victorious, as losing your outpost means imminent defeat. The opposing forces are quickly building their own outpost, and before you know it you’re engaged in a one-on-one battle for mineral supremacy. It seems like a boring and thankless job, until you notice a strange structure in the distance. A fierce battle rages on in the surrounding area, but you’re stuck guarding these precious resources from falling into enemy hands. You’ll play as a commander in charge of a lone outpost, sitting on the edge of one of the last known deposits of minerals. Forts features some unique gameplay elements that will force you to think on your toes and flex your creative muscle. This isn’t your everyday action-strategy game. EarthWork Games is trying its best to break into the Indie industry with a Worms-esque battle game that mixes entertaining back-and-forth warfare with the added bonus of creative fort-building. I haven’t seen many games on the horizon that feature this style of strategic turn-based combat, but upcoming indie release Forts is showing a lot of promise. I always loved the strategy, and the way the worlds were almost completely destructible.

I’ve even found myself revisiting the series and grabbing titles I may have missed whenever the annual Steam sales pop up. Growing up, one of my favorite games to play was Worms.
